Men’s hoops plays last exibition on Sunday

At 4:05 p.m. Sunday at the Convocation Center, the NIU men’s basketball team will play the Spotlite Jammers in its final exhibition game before the regular season begins.

NIU will start the regular season on Nov. 22 at home against Eastern Illinois.

The Spotlite game will be the last time for NIU coach Rob Judson to get a look at his new players.

In the team’s first exhibition game Wednesday night, he was impressed with what he saw in a 101-71 win over North Central College.

“I really liked the way our new guys played,” Judson said. “When you play unselfishly, it seems to come to you much more quickly, and I think they experienced that. I thought Mike McKinney handled the ball fairly well, and I thought our new guys shot the ball with confidence.”

Three of the Huskies’ six players that reached double-digit scoring were first-year players. Freshmen Paige Paulsen, Ryan Paradise and Mike McKinney all had 11 points on a combined 12-for-14 shooting from the field.

The Spotlite Jammers are coached by Larry Butler, the head of the Illinois Warriors high school traveling squad, which has alumni such as the NBA’s Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson. The Jammers consist of former college players.

The Jammers lost 97-92 to Western Illinois on Tuesday. Butler’s team was led by former Cleveland State star Mike Bowens, who scored 18 points.
