Construction sites hit by string of thefts

By Clint Gendusa

During the past few months DeKalb Police have received several theft reports of generators and other construction tools at construction sites throughout the city.

According to James McDougall, DeKalb Police detective of criminal investigations, the thefts are believed to have been occurring during the evening hours. They have been reported since the middle of February with the most recent reported last week.

“The first incident occurred at a residential construction site on the south side where several generators were stolen. Two weeks ago, a housing development reported generators and tools missing, and the past week a commercial construction company reported generators and a 1990 dark blue Ford one ton truck stolen,” McDougall said.

The construction site thefts have been spread out throughout most of the city, with one happening on the south side, another on the north side and the third, most recent theft, in downtown DeKalb. The stolen generators are valued at about $5,000.

The truck, owned by Rockford electrician Kelso Burnett, was recovered last Wednesday in Chicago, but no information about the thieves was obtained from the finding.

None of the other stolen items have been recovered at this time.

McDougall said the main link is the generators.

“We have not found any pattern in the similarities with the construction site thefts, except for the fact that generators were stolen from each site,” McDougall said.

There were no witnesses to the thefts, but the police have been successful in coming up with a few leads to the construction site thefts.

Anyone having information about the recent construction site thefts are encouraged to call the DeKalb Police Department at 756_1421 or Crime Stoppers at 895_3272.

All calls will remain anonymous.
