Landscape waste program begins

Attention DeKalb residents: the city wants your landscape waste.

The city of DeKalb’s Curbside Landscape Waste Collection Program begins today and will run until Nov. 30, 1993.

Starting April 5, residents will be able to place their landscape waste at curbsides for pickup on Mondays or Tuesdays, the same day their recyclables are collected. On these days, two trucks will go through the residential areas of DeKalb. One truck will collect the recyclables and the other will pick up the landscape waste.

The program was developed because of a state legislative law stating landscape waste was no longer allowed in landfills. DeKalb’s landscape waste goes to the DeKalb County Disposal Facility at 115 Simonds Ave. in DeKalb.

“The program has drastically reduced the amount of waste generated by the community,” said Cameron Davis, administrative assistant for DeKalb Department of Public Works.

Davis wants residents to be aware that the waste is taken to the facility and stacked in piles and then left to compost. “Residents are welcome and in fact encouraged to come and use the old compost on gardens and other yard work. It’s a great fertilizer,” Davis said.

Until the curbside pickup service begins, residents can dispose of their yard waste at the DeKalb County Disposal Facility on Simonds Avenue in DeKalb. For their convenience, a marked drop-off container is available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Davis said, “Residents should be forewarned that if their landscape waste is in a plastic bag or cardboard box, it will not be collected. Plastic bags are forbidden because they interfere with the composting equipment. Cardboard boxes are deemed unacceptable because they fall apart when they are damp from the morning dew.”

Residents are encouraged to place material on the curb in one of the following containers: a 30-gallon metal refuse container, a 30-gallon paper landscape waste bag or a 90-gallon cart rented from DeKalb County Disposal.
