Red Lobster feels the pinch

Next month, the quickly growing Sycamore Road area will lose a veteran restaurant.

Melanie Bacino, general manager of Red Lobster, 2470 Sycamore Road, said management is set to close the restaurant’s doors as early as Oct. 12. The store, which is relocating to Geneva, has been at the current location for more than eight years.

Bacino was informed of the location change about three months ago by the corporate office. Construction of the new site on Randall Road in Geneva began a short time later.

Employees were told in late August about the decision and were given the opportunity to transfer to the new restaurant. Those employees not moving to the Geneva location were given an appreciation package, Bacino said.

At least half of the restaurant’s 64 employees will continue working 20 miles away at the Geneva location.

Bacino said financial reasons were key in the decision to relocate the restaurant.

“Here in DeKalb, we are more of a special-occasion restaurant instead of one people would frequent once or twice a week,” Bacino said.

Bacino said she is not sure who, if anyone, will move into the soon-to-be vacant building. No one at Red Lobster’s corporate office was available for comment.
