By academic success and community service efforts, Sigma Gamma Rho is holding true to its motto: “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”

Tara McDonald, a member of the Zeta Nu chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, said the sorority has the highest grade point average of all Greeks on campus. The Zeta Nu chapter recently was recognized for this and other achievements.

According to the official Sigma Gamma Rho Web site, www.sgrho1922.org, the national chapter was founded in 1922 to promote education, and it continues to promote and encourage high scholastic attainment. The Web site also said the sorority believes self-respect, knowledge and discipline gained through study will help individuals recognize their duty and responsibility in society.

At the sorority’s regional conference, the Zeta Nu chapter was awarded the Undergraduate Chapter of the Year Award by its national president, Helen J. Owens. The chapter also received the Undergraduate Achievement Award for having the highest GPA at NIU.

According to the official Web site of Sigma Gamma Rho, Sigma Gamma Rho’s aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. McDonald said the Zeta Nu chapter will continue this tradition through educational programming and volunteer work.

Laverne Gyant, member and adviser of Sigma Gamma Rho, said this is proof people of small numbers can do big things.

“This award shows that Greek organizations do more than just throw parties,” Gyant said. “Community service is priority for Greek organizations.”
