Student on bike hit by car near VCB parking lot

A Tuesday afternoon accident near Lucinda Avenue sent a bicyclist to the hospital.

Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb police department said Alexandria Vernasco, 19, of Westmont was riding on the sidewalk when she came to the entrance in front of Village Commons Bookstore parking lot in the 900 block of Lucinda Avenue.

Police said Dave Jennings, 26, of 805 Greenbrier Apt. A, who also is an assistant coach for the NIU women’s track-and-field team, was in his truck waiting to turn left from the drive.

“I looked left and I looked right,” Jennings said. “I didn’t see anything coming, and then I heard something hit my truck.” He said he didn’t know he had collided with Vernasco until after a group of people ran into the street and stopped him as he was turning.

According to the police report, Vernasco was knocked over and pinned beneath the front end of the bike.

Kayes said Vernasco’s front bike tire was hit by the front of the truck, forcing her to the ground. He said both Jennings and Vernasco had been stopped at the drive. Jennings then pulled ahead when he thought he had the right of way, Kayes said.

Kayes said he could not comment on the condition of Vernasco, but said she had been taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

“Of course I feel very sorry that she got hurt,” Jennings said. “I don’t even know what I should say.”

Jennings was cited for failing to yield to a bicyclist.
