Sting nets 132 arrests

DeKalb police coordinated a liquor sting with the Illinois State Police this weekend that netted 132 violations, primarily in the Greek Row neighborhood.

Seventy minors were cited for possession of alcohol, while 19 minors were cited for consumption of alcohol and 43 individuals received citations for open-container violations.

DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said the sting was conducted to curb what some view as excessive illegal drinking activity in the neighborhood, and it probably will not be the last operation of its kind this year.

The sting included plainclothes officers who visited parties and arrested offending minors as they left the premises.

“We’ll be hitting liquor enforcement pretty hard, especially on Thursday with the game and Friday, and around Homecoming,” Kayes said. “But probably not with these kinds of numbers.”

Each citation carries a fine of $200.

Police worked the area with three undercover officers, three officers standing by in police vehicles and additional personnel as they were available. Up to 12 officers patrolled the area at any given time.

Kayes added that with more personnel, the number of citations could “realistically be doubled.”
