NIU student chooses to waive preliminary hearing right

By Rachel Helfrich

NIU student Kelly McClure appeared in court Friday morning for a status hearing regarding the felony theft charges that she faces.

In the hearing, McClure, a former Northern Star reporter and journalism major, waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

A date for the next hearing has not yet been determined.

McClure faces charges of felony theft after allegedly defrauding people on the eBay Web site.

She is said to have advertised and received payment for concert tickets she did not have. McClure cashed the checks and money orders sent to her by the victims, but never sent the products they were promised.

Ann Fredlin, a New York City stock broker and a alleged victim to McClure’s fraud, said McClure kept everyone’s money.

Fredlin also said the four people she scammed gave her ample time to pay back and apologize, but they didn’t see any results.

“Nobody is going to let this rest, because she is still condescending,” Fredlin said.

She also said McClure said she would pay everyone back, but the alleged victims refused to fall for that.

EBay is said to be looking into the case as well.

According to their Web site, “It is not permitted for a seller on eBay to accept payment or fail to deliver an item at the end of a successful sale.”

Fredlin said she would drop the case if McClure would pay the check fee.

McClure did not return calls seeking comment.
