Jesse White re-elected as Secretary of State

By Matthew Taillon

Democrat Secretary of State candidate Jesse White was re-elected Tuesday with more than two times as many votes as the Republican candidate Kris O’Rourke Cohn.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, White received 68 percent of the vote while Cohn received 30 percent.

Liberal candidate Matt Beauchamp, running on the driver’s license campaign “15 Minutes or It’s Free!” snagged only 2 percent.

White plans to make good use of his new term. Some of his plans include increasing DMV bureau hours, setting up a drive-through license renewal facility and increasing customer service at driver facilities.

One experimental plan is to utilize the Internet and kiosks in malls and DMV facilities that will allow drivers to get licenses within seven minutes with little or no hassle.

“People could go to a car shop and drive away with an official license instead of a temporary license,” White said.

White told voters he and other Democratic candidates are committed to providing better service to Illinois residents.

“The bottom line is, we are going to provide more quality service to the people,” White said during his victory speech.

Some voters said they elected Democrats just to keep the party in power.

“My parents persuaded me to vote Democrat so White could get in again,” freshman English major Kim Slingerland said. “Voting Democrat is like a religion for us.”
