LGBC, RHA panel addresses questions

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Coalition and the Residence Hall Association held a question and answer session Wednesday in which several topical issues, including homosexuals in the military, were discussed.

The LGBC presented a panel of two co-presidents of its organization, a former marine who is gay, and a woman whose father is gay. The format consisted of the audience members questions being read from cards by a moderator.

The event was held in the Stevenson South Residence Halls and about 25 NIU students took part, two of whom were residence hall assistants.

On the issue of homosexuals in the military, the consensus of the panel believed it would happen soon.

The former marine stated that he still knows gay men who are in the military.

When asked how he dealt with his feelings while living in close quarters with other men, he said homosexuality was the last thing he thought about because “the military teaches control and discipline.”

Another question dealt with the recent name change of the LGBC from its former name, the Gay Lesbian Union. One of the co-presidents said the name was more inclusive to bisexuals. The panel agreed many gays and lesbians are not open towards bisexuals, and this move would help increase understanding.

Another issue discussed was what it was like having to deny who you were before you came out of the closet.

One of the co-presidents said, “It was depressing. I never considered suicide, but I know that many other people do.”

Another topic of discussion was the Second Amendment recently voted on in Colorado. The panel explained the amendment gives homosexuals no method of recourse for being kicked out of an apartment simply for being gay. They stated that a question of quotas was made in relation to the amendment.

One panelist said it wasn’t a question of special rights being asked for, but of basic rights being ensured.
