Police: Bus victim feared seizure

Although she remembers little of the accident, sophomore nursing major Harpreet Rehal told DeKalb police that an epileptic seizure scare caused her to step in front of a Huskie bus last Tuesday afternoon.

According to the police report released Thursday, the bus was turning right onto Lucinda Avenue when Rehal stepped off the curb and walked into the University Circle roadway. The bus hit her, and the rear tire ran over her right foot.

Rehal told the Northern Star Wednesday that she remembers slipping on ice and seeing the bus come toward her, but nothing else. She said she woke up to witnesses telling her what happened.

DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said that while the police report mentions a seizure, all that’s clear is that Rehal walked into the bus.

“At first she said she thought she was going to have a seizure, but then she didn’t, and she kept walking,” Kayes said.

No charges have been filed against Rehal or Kirkland resident Gregory Hay, 42, who was driving the bus. Hay declined to comment on the accident, as did Huskie Bus officials, who wouldn’t expand on the police report details.

Kayes doesn’t expect charges to be filed.

“If she had a medical disorder, I don’t think it would be right to do that in this case,” he said.
