Local organization sponsors car show

If football games and wild parties don’t spin your wheels, maybe you should spend some time at the First Annual DeKalb Auto Show on Homecoming weekend.

Pi Sigma Epsilon, a professional sales and marketing fraternity at NIU, is hosting a car show on Oct. 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Chick Evans Field House parking lot.

The show will feature “What to see in ‘93” with a display of 22 different cars. The show will introduce some of the new 1993 models, as well as the last of the 1992 cars. Participating dealers include Sawyer Auto Imports, Joyce of Sycamore, Brian Bemis Auto World and Sycamore Auto Center.

Mel Heckman, vice president of marketing for Pi Sigma Epsilon, said the car show will provide another attraction for Homecoming guests.

“It’s something new,” Heckman said. “We wanted to do something completely different and completely fun (to draw attention to the organization). It’ll give people a chance to look at Pi Sigma Epsilon and see what we’re all about.”

The auto show also will benefit area car dealers.

Terry Foley, general sales manager of Joyce Pontiac and GMC Jeep/Eagle Toyota in Sycamore, said the show will give local car dealers the opportunity to do something for the community and NIU.

Because area dealers are significantly smaller than those in the suburbs, “sometimes we have to do a little more to be part of the community,” Foley said.

Ron Kopack, a sales representative for Sawyer Auto Imports, said the car show “is very good exposure” because area dealers get a lot of business from the NIU community.

Nick’s Sandwiches will provide food at the show, and Stax-O-Wax Mobile DJs will provide entertainment. The show is free.
