Cross-country club off and running

NIU’s cross-country club is back for another year of running against the opposition and Mother Nature.

Last Saturday, the Huskies participated in the Beloit College Invite and finished a respectable sixth out of 21 teams. NIU finished with 215 points, just behind fifth-place finisher and Mid-Continent Conference foe Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Gary Randles was the Huskies’ top runner by placing 18th. Mitch Rubenstein was 36th, while Dan Jacobson finished 50th.

Other NIU finishers included Vince Warner (73rd), Jeff Hargarten (80th) and Kevin Temple (118th).

The Huskies have been gradually improving since their season began at the North Central College Invite.

NIU placed eighth (277 points) out of 19 teams at the Sept. 12 meet.

On Sept. 19, NIU ran in the Midwest Collegiate Cross-Country Championships and placed 20th out of the 29 teams with 595 points.

Next up for the Huskies is the Loyola University Invite on Saturday in Chicago.

The team is still looking for any students who have the urge to run and compete on a weekly basis. If interested, you may call Dan Jacobson at 756-8699.
