Memorial fund established in honor of NIU professor

A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Don W. Arnold, a former NIU marketing professor and administrator, who died at age 78 last Saturday at the DeKalb Oak Crest Health Care Center.

Before coming to NIU, Arnold was an instructor at the Galesburg branch of the University of Illinois from 1946-49. He later served as the chair of the business education department at Elgin High School and Elgin Community College from 1949-57 and then joined NIU’s business faculty in 1957.

Arnold’s career at NIU was distinguished. He was the director of NIU’s Peace Corps project, in charge of training volunteers to work in Malaysia and also was assistant to the dean of the College of Business.

Arnold, who retired in 1975, was a member of the honorary business and economic societies. He also was a member of the American Economic Association, American Marketing Association, National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association.

His wife Marian said that she helped set up the fund in her husband’s name because “Don was always concerned with the welfare of others.”

She said the two became involved with the American Heart Association after her late husband’s heart attack in 1976 and started contributing to the AHA and the Good Samaritan Fund.

Marian said any contributions to the fund can be made to either of these organizations at the DeKalb Oak Crest Retirement Center, 2944 Green Acre Drive.

Karen Remen, Oak Crest director of admission and marketing, said “the Good Samaritan fund is one that pays a person’s financial way if they happen to outlive their assets.”

She said she felt that Arnold personified a good samaritan in life. “Don was a generous, thoughtful, well-liked and active member of the community.”

Remen said that he and his wife were great contributors to the community. “Don will be greatly missed.”
