Park District to sponsor aerobics training class

If you always daydream about leading an aerobics class, or working at a gym, then the DeKalb Park District has just the thing for you.

The park district is sponsoring an eight-hour seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 4 at the Hopkins Park Community Center.

Suzanne Wielgos, fitness coordinator and instructor of the seminar, said anyone interested in gaining experience as a fitness instructor should attend the “Aerobics Instructor Training Workshop” program.

“(The seminar) is targeted for NIU students who need some sort of practical hands-on experience in physical education instruction,” she said. “We really want to help students.”

Wielgos said a certificate of completion will be given to all participants who complete the class and are certified in CPR or attain CPR certification in the near future.

Wielgos also said the certificate might prove valuable when looking for employment.

“If they don’t have hands-on experience of being in front of other people, that makes it pretty hard for (the park) to hire them,” Wielgos said.

The seminar stems from an informal survey conducted by Gloria Oesterling, program director of the DeKalb Park District, to determine the needs of the community.

“It’s a great opportunity to serve a need in the community,” Oesterling said.

The cost of the seminar is $40, and interested students can reserve a space in the class by calling Hopkins Park at 895-9195.
