SA to register students for presidential election

NIU’s Student Association is firing up its voter registration drive for the 1992 presidential elections.

The last day to register to vote is Oct. 5, and elections are scheduled for Nov. 3.

SA Public Relations Adviser Anna Bicanic said the SA’s goal is to register 5,000 voters. Hopefully, she said the large amount of voters will help attract key candidates to NIU.

“Getting more students registered will hopefully allow us to wield more influence in Springfield on issues pertaining to student interests,” she said.

Voter Registration Chair Jordan Kagan is spearheading the SA’s registration efforts.

Kagan plans to deputize up to 60 students from interested organizations, such as the College Republicans, Young Democrats, Students for Braun and the SA, to help spread the election word.

“Together we will be out in force registering students and other interested individuals to vote,” Kagan said.

Registering takes only a minute and costs nothing, he said.

Two forms of identification must be presented to register. One piece of identification must contain a local address. A phone bill or a piece of mail can be used.

Registering in DeKalb helps avoid the hassle of voting absentee, Kagan said.

However, students can vote absentee by contacting the County Clerk’s office of their hometown county by Oct. 1.

“The County Clerk will send a ballot to you after considering the application,” Kagan said. “You must then send the ballot back.”

Kagan also encouraged individuals who register to save their receipts.

“The DeKalb County Clerk’s office will have a tremendous amount of registrations to process,” he said.

“You may not receive your voter’s card in time for the election, but the receipt will allow you to vote.”
