DeKALB – Criminal offenses declined in 2020 compared to 2018 and 2019, data shows from NIU’s Annual Security Report and 2021 Fire Safety Report released Friday.

Rape cases have declined from 16 reported incidents in 2019 to a total of six cases in 2020. Robbery cases have remained the same at one incident reported each year. The only criminal offense that has seen an increase is aggravated assault from six total cases to seven in 2020.

Violence Against Women Act has seen a decrease on campus, including residence halls, as well as off-campus reported rape cases. Dating violence went down from 36 total cases in 2018 to 14 total cases in 2020. Domestic violence cases dropped down to four total incidents reported compared from seven to the two previous years.

Arrests made by the NIU Police Department have also declined, with most of the arrests being made off-campus on public property. In 2018, there were 13 arrests made for drug related cases, which have remained at six arrests the following two years. Weapon arrests have remained the same from 2019 to 2020 at five total weapon related arrests made.

Judicial referrals have seen the largest decline compared to previous years. Alcohol referrals were at 100 in 2018 and then 87 the following year. However, in 2020 there were a total of 13 cases.
