Can someone please tell me why Magic Johnson has become such a hero in the past six months? Is it because he committed adultery? Is it because his infidelity resulted in a fatal disease? Millions upon millions of married people have cheated on their spouses, but they aren’t nearly so highly regarded. An untold number of infants will be born and are being born with the AIDS virus – where are their benefit concerts?

Apparently, celebrity status assures the world that you can do no wrong. That must be the case, because if I robbed a bank and was shot and seriously wounded a guard (an appropriate metaphor for Magic’s situation), I seriously doubt that Nickelodeon would give me a children’s special.

Can’t we find a better hero?
