Events highlight National Hispanic Month

National Hispanic Month kicked off with a rally in the King Memorial Commons last Wednesday and many events are planned for this week.

Proclamations were read Thursday declaring April as National Hispanic Month for NIU and the DeKalb community.

The proclamations were read by NIU President John La Tourette, DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow and DeKalb County Board Chairman Robert Hutcheson.

Some events for this week include:

Monday – At noon in the commons “Dance with Danca Quente,” with complimentary raspas, or snow cones. Also, Diego Juarez, from the Mexican Consulate, will speak on the “North American Economic Alliance” at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Room in the Holmes Student Center.

Tuesday – “Latino Fest” at noon in the commons. The fest is sponsored by Zeta Sigma Chi. The event will be held in the Ballroom at the HSC.

Wednesday – “Jalapeno Eating Contest” and pinata party for Campus Child Care Center at noon in the commons.

Lecture by poetry-reading teacher Pablo Virumbrales at 7 p.m. in the HSC Illinois Room.

Thursday – “Loteria,” similar to bingo, at noon in the commons. Prizes will be awarded.

Also, film, “Viritiana,” at 8:45 p.m. in Jack Arends Art Building, Room 100. The film cosponsored by the CAB Cine Club.

Friday – “O.L.A.S. Talent Show” at 7 p.m. in the HSC Capitol Room. The event is cosponsored by the Organization of Latin American Students.

Saturday – Dance at 8 p.m. in HSC Diversions Lounge with Alpha Psi Lambda.

Events celebrating National Hispanic Month will continue throughout April.
