Lack of coverage

November 17, 1988

I am very appalled at your poor coverage of the 1988 Homecoming King and Queen. It is very ridiculous that something big such as that appeared a week later in the Star! I think if you'd spend less time and space on features about block parties on Greek...

Swimmers keep hold of perfect record

November 17, 1988

It doesn't require a magnifying glass, but NIU men's swimming coach Dave Clark sees a lot more than a close 159-140 victory Wednesday over visiting Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The Huskies outscored the Panthers by a 13-4 margin in the final 200-yard freestyle relay event in order to secure the 19-point victory and a perfect 4-0 dual-meet record.

The Huskies needed more than just a quick start as NIU touched first and third in the opening 200-yard medley relay followed by a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,000-yard freestyle thanks to George Brooker, Steve Sanders and Tom South. Milwaukee came back with a 1-2-3 of its own in the 100-yard breaststroke.

NIU ran up another 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard butterfly thanks to Bill Zolna, Dave Talbot and Mike Godsted. The Panthers came back with a 1-2-3 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Diving was another example of the see-saw action as NIU's Ken Ricker claimed the one-meter title while UWM's Mike Frehe was the three-meter winner.

In addition to Brooker, Zolna and Ricker, the Huskies received first-place finishes from Randy Faherty—who touched first in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle—Talbot in the 100-yard freestyle and Andy Flodin in the 100-yard butterfly.

Jayson Pettit, Kevin Bolger, Flodin and Todd Klumb comprised NIU's lead-off 200-yard medley relay unit while Faherty, Klumb, Art Sanchez and Talbot were the triumphant foursome for the 200-yard freestyle relay finale.

NIU heads out to Bradley on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest.

Expansion a logical solution

November 16, 1988

Allowing Sycamore residents to use the Huskie Bus Line Route 9 is a logical idea which should have been implemented when the route started. The Student Association Mass Transit Board recently has discussed the feasibility of allowing Sycamore residents...

Will, positive attitude can defeat obstacles

November 16, 1988

Jennifer Ettema wanted to graduate. That was her goal—plain and simple. But that doesn't sound very different from any of the other hundereds of thousands of students who have and who will attend NIU or even any other university for that matter, now...

Whale rescue irony

November 15, 1988

What a nice story the rescue of the whales provided. Not only did it give us a chance to show that we really do care about our helpless friends, but also provided another opportunity to prove that we can cooperate with the Soviets. Doesn't it make us...

Prejudice must end

November 15, 1988

I realize Sean Noble's column of Oct. 27 was meant to be taken with some humor, but even in his light hearted manner he has shown a prejudice that needs to be ended. Phrases such as "...Godless Communists..." and "...pinkos..." are terribly narrow minded...

‘Two-faced logic’

November 15, 1988

After reading the Star editorial on Wednesday, Oct. 12, I had to look at the editorial masthead to see if the editorial board had changed overnight. The editorial stated that Huskie bus riders should pay their own fares, and students who don't need or...
