Regents wait for confirmation

By Eric Krol

After nearly a year of waiting, Gov. Jim Edgar has appointed three new members to NIU’s governing board.

In doing so, Edgar chose not to reappoint three members of the Board of Regents whose six-year terms expired in January.

A Friday afternoon press release stated Barbara Scheibling, James Myles and Niranjan Shaah were appointed by Edgar to serve on the Regents, which govern NIU, Illinois State University at Normal and Sangamon State University at Springfield.

Regents Chancellor’s Assistant Cheryl Peck said the trio must be confirmed by the state senate, which could take place sometime in January.

Until confirmation, the appointees can attend Regents meetings but cannot vote, Peck said. The outgoing Regents, who have 36 combined years of experience, Clara Fitzpatrick, Jerome Bender and James Wright, will retain their vote and serve until the new Regents are confirmed.

If confirmed, Scheibling will serve as the SSU alumni Regent. NIU and ISU already had alumni on the Board because of a state law which required an alumnus from each school to serve on the Regents.

Scheibling, 54, is currently pursuing her master’s degree at SSU. She received a bachelor’s degree from the school in 1973, Peck said. Scheibling also has a nursing degree from Temple University, she added.

Scheibling also was an instructor of publication design at SSU from 1985-87 and owns Corporate Image Design, a business graphics design company, Peck said.

According to the press release, Scheibling will replace Fitzpatrick on the Board.

Little information was available on the other appointees.

Myles, 54, is a Chicago native and treasurer of the General Service Employees Union. The press release stated Myles will be taking Wright’s place as Regent.

Shaah, 46, is the Chief Executive Officer of Globetrotter Engineering Corporation in Chicago. Shaah will replace Bender.
