Group to serve older students

Older students who feel lost in the crowd might benefit from a new organization on campus.

Students Who Are Nontraditional, is still in the planning stages of becoming recognized by the Student Association.

Chris Hinde, 57, said he would head the organization.

Since about 30 percent of NIU students are over the age of 30, the purpose of SWAN is to create a place for these older students to study, to let them know what obstacles and trauma they may encounter and provide support groups to help them deal with being overwhelmed by their class load, Hinde said.

One of SWAN’s goals is to help “return adult students back to the populace,” Hinde said, adding some of these students haven’t had to deal with new feelings they encounter at NIU in many years.

Another important goal includes getting the adult students to overcome their intimidation.

To get the students involved and informed about SWAN, Hinde would like to pass out pamphlets and have an orientation session.

As soon as people hear about this organization, there should be a lot of participation and support, Hinde said.

So far, SWAN has received a huge amount of support from the University Resources for Women, he said.
