Disc jockey to host 24-hour ‘torture trip’

By Jean Dobrzynski

An NIU radio station disc jockey will find out if a 24-hour live broadcast will be a delight or pure torture.

Departing WKDI DJ Bob English will host “Bob’s Torture Trip With Drew,” from midnight tonight until midnight Wednesday. English and his side-kick, Andrew Landsly or “Drew,” regularly have aired the only talk-radio show on WKDI, 93.5 F.M.

“Bob’s Talk Radio Trip With Drew” airs every Sunday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

English said he came up with the idea for the 24-hour show after watching an old “Dick Van Dyke” rerun on television in which Van Dyke, who was hosting a radio broadcast, stayed on the air for several hours.

“I wanted to do something that nobody has ever done before and I wanted to go out with a bang,” English said.

This will be English’s last show because he is transferring to the University of Illinois at Chicago next semester to study radio broadcasting.

The special show will include live remotes from the residence halls, “twisted” listener recruitment and playbacks from funny segments throughout their three years on the air. The show also will include music from groups “A to Z,” English said.

To stay awake, English said he plans to take a lot of No-Doze and caffeine. “I got a lot of late-night practice over Spring Break in Panama City,” he said. “That should not be a problem.”

Mike Gallagher, WKDI program director, said he thinks the pair can stay up for the full 24 hours.

“It won’t be the typical Bob English show, there will be more music and guests, but it will still be good,” he said.

Landsly said he will not be able to be at the station for the entire 24 hours because of tests. “Unfortunately, I have to go to a few of my classes because of tests,” he said.

“But I am really excited about the show and I will be at WKDI whenever I don’t have to be in class,” he said.

English said listeners can call the station at 753-WKDI to request music or to do something out of the ordinary in order to win a prize.
