Local restaurant struck by burglar

A burglar smashed the glass door of a local restaurant late Sunday and stole $350 from the restaurant’s cash register, police said.

“Someone threw a rock the size of a 16-inch softball through the door,” said John Schwartz, co-owner of P.J.‘s Red Hots, 817 W. Lincoln Hwy.

Schwartz said the burglary happened between its 10 p.m. closing time Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday, when police called them.

The burglar walked in, took the money and left, Schwartz said. “They didn’t steal any of the stock. Nothing else was disturbed,” he said.

“Someone broke in and took some cash and we’re looking into it,” said DeKalb Police Lt. Dick Moudy.

This is the first time the restaurant was robbed in its 10-year history, Schwartz said. “It’s just one of those things,” he said. “There’s nothing we can do.”

Schwartz said he plans to reinforce the glass on the front door to discourage burglaries.
