Fire Dept. gives NIU students safety tips for holiday season

The DeKalb Fire Department warned citizens and NIU students about electrical safety on decorations and Christmas trees for the holiday season.

“I like to warn people on the use of extention cords; do not use more than two together. It’s a good source of fire over the years,” said DeKalb Fire Department Capt. Warren Lubbers. “Heavy duty extension cords should be used instead of those light ones,” he said.

“People should set lights away from flammable electric heaters. Around public buildings, no lights should be set on trees,” Lubbers said.

“People should water trees and make sure they don’t get dried up,” he said.”

From past experiences of Christmas fires, Lubbers said he thinks people are careless. “Many people just forget to turn off Christmas lights when they are not around,” Lubbers said.

He suggested only lights designed for outside use should be used outdoors, and tree lights which do not give off a lot of heat also can prevent problems.

According to Commonwealth Edison, only lighting sets and extension cords carrying the Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) label should be used.

Other safety tips provided by Commonwealth Edison include a few precautions ensuring a safe holiday. It would be a good idea for beginners to inspect last year’s lighting sets and discard any damaged plugs or cords.

Keep tinsel away from electrical plugs and sockets, and maintain a safe distance from overhead electric power lines or facilities, especially when using a metal ladder or tools.

The UL seal on an electrical toy shows the item has been tested for the safety of its electrical parts. With various electrical toys, such as stoves and irons, children need adult supervision to learn how to operate them safely.
