Activities to beat the cold

By Danielle Keys

During the spring semester, students tend to spend most of their time inside because of the weather. This doesn’t have to be the case, however, because there are many fun things to do on and off campus that will keep you out of the cold.

Go to a museum

Not only is NIU about an hour away from Chicago, which houses some of the best museums in the country, but there is also an art museum on campus located in Altgeld Hall. Admission is free and right now through Feb. 27 there is an exhibition called (Re)Presenting Guatemala. For information on museum hours and upcoming exhibitions go to their website.

Catch a movie

Recently, the DeKalb Market Square movie theater, 2160 Sycamore Road, underwent some renovations including the addition of reclining chairs. Students should take advantage of the theater’s $5 Tuesdays where all movies are $5.

Students can also catch movies in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium, located in the Holmes Student Center, for free.

Listen to live music

The House, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, is an awesome place to hear live music and see comedy shows. The events held at the House range in price from free to about $14 per ticket, depending on the event. This is a good place to go for a night out with friends to enjoy music or comedy with some awesome food.
