Student hosts evening of dance

DeKALB | Non-traditional sociology major Maurice Bailey wants to unite the community with an evening of stepping and jazz music.

Bailey, 41, of DeKalb, is leading the event 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday at the House Café, 263 E. Lincoln Highway.

He said dress to impress as attendees should be prepared to dance to jazz, blues and R&B. Tickets are $7 at the door.

Bailey has been a resident of DeKalb for 23 years and

“Me being a sociology major, I understand the importance of bringing the community together,” Bailey said. “Being a resident since 1993 and see the transition of all people come to DeKalb…it’s a bit of a culture shock until they adjust. So I want people with similarities to come together.”

Bailey recently became a member of the Human Relations Commission of DeKalb. The commission members, appointed by Mayor John Rey for a two-year term, aim to foster respect and support for diversity and dignity of all people through relationship-building between its diverse citizens, groups and organizations, according to the City of DeKalb’s website.

“I want to sum it up as an evening of diversity,” Bailey said. “All interested in coming out are welcome.”
