‘Catfish’ co-hosts will reel in fans

Unusual plotlines and celebrity guests will muddy the water in a unique season four of MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show,” which premieres Wednesday.

The show usually follows hosts Yaniv “Nev” Schulman and Max Joseph as they help people with online lovers they’ve never met find out who they’re really talking to.

The hosts investigate the mystery lover, or catfish, by running reverse look-ups on the person’s phone number, looking for social media profiles with the same photos the person is using and by ultimately convincing the person to tell the truth about who they are.

Often, the person Nev and Max investigate turns out to be an impersonator, using fake names and photos to pretend to be someone he or she is not.

When filming for the fourth season of “Catfish” began, Max was busy shooting a movie starring actor Zac Efron, called “We Are Your Friends.” Instead of hosting alone, Nev found five celebrities, including YouTube personality Tyler Oakley and radio host Charlamagne Tha God, to help him do his detective work in each of the five episodes Max missed.

In addition to sneak peeks from the celebrity-hosted episodes, trailers for season four episodes show plotlines differing from the typical mystery lover episode, like cyber-bullies who are potentially impersonating others to bully unsuspecting victims.

Rather than tears or laughter, trailers also show angry and shocked responses from hosts and subjects of the show, with one subject threatening to fight someone.

Episodes in the past have followed a similar formula: Subjects email the hosts, who then Skype with the subjects, asking them to talk about their Internet relationships. Nev and Max ask the subjects questions about their significant others and agree to fly to the subjects’ cities to further investigate the identity of the significant others.

Depending on whether the catfish are who they say they are, the subjects decide whether to remain in a relationship with them, become friends or never speak to them again.

While the bickering and conversations between Nev and Max are funny and entertaining, it will be nice to see the celebrity guests’ reactions to situations in an unusual setting.

The plot twists and over-the-top reactions will add fire to the compelling and suspenseful show, making season four its most relatable and surprising one.
