City blotter for 1/24/12

The following was taken directly from area police and fire department records, or from DeKalb County court records. Anyone mentioned is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Saturday

At 2:16 a.m., a DeKalb police officer observed a driver appeared to not be wearing a seat belt. The driver also failed to use a turn signal when turning onto Pappas Drive. The vehicle turned again into a private drive for the Huskie’s Pizza parking lot without using a turn signal. The officer initiated a traffic stop and found the driver, Joseph L. Engel, 20, of Romeoville to be intoxicated. Engel was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to signal and unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor.

At 8:43 p.m., a patrol officer ran a vehicle registration check on a vehicle in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive. The officer learned the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. The driver of the vehicle matched the description of the registered owner and the officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver Gabriel Rodriguez, 30, of DeKalb, was not the registered owner but charged with driving with a license suspended. Rodriguez was placed under arrest and later released on bond.

Sunday

At 1:42 a.m., a DeKalb police officer observed a vehicle’s back end temporarily lose control in the 900 block of North Annie Glidden Road. The officer initiated a traffic stop and smelled an alcoholic odor coming from the driver, Nathan Rodney Ferguson, 32, of DeKalb. Ferguson passed a breath sobriety test. However, Ferguson’s license was found to be suspended. Ferguson was arrested, given a court date and later released.

At 9:45 a.m., DeKalb police responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch on Glidden Road north of Old State Road. Michael M. Cibiras, 57, of Kirkland was charged with driving with a revoked driver’s license, failure to appear warrant and unlawful use of weapons from Stark County. Cibiras was taken to the DeKalb County Jail and later posted bond.

At 7:58 p.m., a DeKalb police officer responded to Wal-Mart at 2300 Sycamore Road for a retail theft call. The complainant advised that the suspect selected several items in the cosmetics section, concealed the items, then bought two candy bars and exited the store. The suspect, Jenelle Mendoza, 31, of Aurora was arrested and brought to the DeKalb County jail. Mendoza’s children were released to her husband and Mendoza was later released on bond.
