Commission discusses cover charge tax

By Andrew Schlesser

The DeKalb Liquor Commission met to discuss aspects of the city’s liquor ordinances in need of improvement.

The commission determined the city cannot fairly tax cover charges at bars. However, the topic was removed from discussion for future meetings.

The commission also discussed changing an outdoor event ordinance about the number of events allowed per day.

The ordinance under review states only one special outdoor event can be held per day in DeKalb.

DeKalb City Attorney Norma Guess will draw up a potential revision to the ordinance to allow for more than one event per day. Final approval will be needed from the liquor commissioner and chief of police.

The city is growing and this ordinance should be changed so that when this situation comes up, it can be handled, liquor commission member Michael Embrey said.

Other items on the agenda concern the addition of a deputy liquor commissioner, the differentiation of Class A-bar liquor licenses from Class A-package store liquor licenses and the waitstaff and bartender training certifications were postponed until the next meeting. The liquor commission will meet at 7 p.m. April 18 in Room 212 of the DeKalb Municipal Building.
