Police arrest man for home invasion

A man arrested for home invasion near the NIU Music Building Wednesday previously had a relationship with one of the victims, DeKalb police said Thursday.

Police said Willie Wilson, 43, 629 High Terrace, was at a residence in the 300 block of Augusta Avenue at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, returning a bicycle he borrowed from one of the victims.

Wilson then ran up the stairs of the building, knocking down one person in the process, and attempted to gain entry to one of the apartments.

DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said Wilson had had a previous relationship with a woman living in the apartment, who was now seeing someone else, and may have been using the bicycle as an excuse.

Kayes said Wilson kicked in the bottom half of the victims’ door while the residents on the other side attempted to hold him back with the remaining top side.

Wilson then began waving his knife through the bottom half of the door, cutting one man’s thumb.

The man was not seriously wounded, Kayes said.

The victims reported the incident to DeKalb police, but Wilson had fled the area, Kayes said. When Wilson returned Wednesday morning, he again fled when officers were sent to the residence and a foot chase ensued.

Wilson made it across the river before being apprehended near the NIU Music Building, Kayes said.

Wilson is being held on $5,000 bond at the DeKalb County Jail on the charges of aggravated battery, two counts of battery, criminal damage to property and possession of cannabis.

A court date has been set for April 26.
