Weekend fight ends in injuries

A fight Friday night in front of Douglas Residence Hall resulted in several injuries but no arrests.

University Police Sergeant Ralph Taylor said the fight involved a group of about 20 individuals who were near Grant Towers South and five other individuals who were returning to Douglas from the Holmes Student Center (HSC).

The five individuals allegedly were involved in a fight in the bus turnaround of the HSC. Taylor said one of the five individuals lived in Douglas while another was a visitor. Taylor said the five were told to return to Douglas and to stay there at 11:30 p.m. by University Police (UP).

“I don’t know whether or not they were trying to start trouble, but they didn’t seem like it. They seemed to want to return to Douglas Hall without causing problems,” Taylor said.

The five then drove to Douglas and parked in lot K, across from Douglas Hall. While walking from the parking lot to Douglas the five allegedly were harassed by about 20 individuals who were near Grant Towers South.

Taylor said the five claimed the group of 20 yelled, “There they are, let’s get them. They don’t go to school here, let’s kick their (butt).”

Taylor said when police arrived the fight was in progress. According to police reports, all UP units and three DeKalb units were dispatched to the area. He said he did not know whether the HSC fight was related to the incidents in front of Douglas Hall.

The group of 20 then chased the five individuals. One of the individuals ran to the front of Grant Towers where he was questioned by police. He told police that the five individuals had done nothing to provoke the group of 20.

Taylor said the individual told police his group did not provoke the altercation because “that would be real dumb,” because there were only five of them.

Others in the group of five said they were assaulted and went back to the car to try and drive away. Taylor said the individuals tried to leave the parking lot at a high rate of speed and struck a parked car.

Taylor said all of the individuals in the car said they had been beaten. They were taken down to the station, but they refused to file a complaint and all refused medical attention.

Another one of the individuals said he was beaten and ran into the lobby of Douglas Hall. A pizza delivery man saw him enter Douglas and told police that a badly beaten man, who was having trouble running, had entered Douglas Hall, Taylor said.

The individual in Douglas refused medical attention and did not file a complaint.

Taylor said because none of the alleged victims filed complaints or identified alleged perpetrators, no arrests were made. He said he couldn’t say whether the incident was gang related or not.

Names of some of the individuals involved in the incident were taken by police and are being forwarded to NIU’s Judicial Office and to State’s Attorney Michael Coghlan.

Assistant Judicial Officer Jenine Povlsen said the information will be given to Judicial Office Director Larry Bolles who will not be in DeKalb until Friday.

She said he will decide if an investigation into the incident should be started and whether action can or should be taken against those involved.
