Park District has a lot to offer this summer

By Mike DeYoung

Now that the winter weather finally has seemed to subside, DeKalb residents can get out and enjoy the summer months.

The DeKalb Park District is offering activities which are available for students and residents.

“This is the time of the year when the NIU and DeKalb communities really interact in a great way,” said Dave Emanuelson, executive director of the DeKalb Park District.

One is the adult softball league which will begin this upcoming weekend.

There are 32 coed teams and 85 men’s teams this year so far.

“The adult softball leagues at Katz Park are the largest we’ve ever seen this year,” Emanuelson said. “Even the youth baseball and softball leagues are growing.”

One of the most popular activities at the DeKalb Park District is the public golf courses. There are two park district golf courses: Buena Vista and River Heights.

The two golf courses are open to the public this summer, and also can be booked for golf outings for large groups of people.

“There are a number of new golf outings this year that we are hosting for other organizations,” Emanuelson said.

The NIU public administration office and the NIU women’s basketball team are two groups that have had golf outings at these this year at the River Heights Golf Course. Also, many fraternities and sororities have booked outings so far.

The Buena Vista Golf Course is located off of North First Street on Buena Vista Drive. The River Heights Golf Course is located on South Annie Glidden Road.

As the city of DeKalb has grown throughout the years, the amounts of activities available to residents have grown with it giving options for fun summer activities for everyone, Emanuelson said. For information, call the DeKalb Park District at 758-6663.
