GLU discusses changing name, Organization seeks to include bisexuals

IU’s Gay/Lesbian Union might be changing its name.

The GLU is discussing several possible changes in the organization to encourage more bisexuals to participate in GLU activities.

Brian Turkaly, co-president of the GLU, said the changes already include the combination of the offices of the president and vice-president. The organization feels this will better enable the officers to have equal authority.

Tara Moyle has been newly appointed as co-president. She is the first lesbian to hold an office of this kind in several years.

“There hasn’t been a whole lot of lesbian participation in the past,” Moyle said. “I wanted to find out what the lesbians on campus wanted as a group, and services and needs on campus.”

Moyle said she wants to reinstate Lesbians United For Fun (LUFF), an open social group for lesbians and bisexual women. The group will meet and show movies, schedule pot-lucks, talk, take trips to Chicago or do whatever the members would like to do. For information on LUFF call 748-5085.

The GLU will decide on changes in the organization’s name at a meeting next Thursday.

“What we want to do is change the organization, just so that bisexuals are included,” Turkaly said.

He said the group has always been open, but a name change would make it more recognizable. The GLU is accepting suggestions for possible names at their office in room 256A of the Holmes Student Center.

“I personally feel that there are many people in the gay community that need to be educated on bisexuality,” Turkaly said.

The GLU also will be planning to initiate a gay/lesbian/bisexual discussion group for people who are uncomfortable at the dances.

“It is important to get to know each other, because it’s difficult to work together as a political group if you’re all strangers,” Moyle said.
