Local tobacco retailers receive ordinance violations

DeKALB — The DeKalb Police Department conducted a tobacco compliance check to determine if local tobacco retailers are complying with local minimum-age tobacco laws. The city of DeKalb has announced the results of tobacco compliance checks conducted on Feb. 19.

The City of DeKalb has been educating tobacco retailers on minimum-age tobacco laws with the help of a grant awarded by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s “Kids Can’t Buy Em here” tobacco enforcement program. Tobacco retailers were each given an information kit and spoke with a police department employee. 

Tobacco retailers were inspected during the second round of three rounds of compliance checks in the city, with a total of 34 tobacco retailers inspected. Five establishments violated the law by selling tobacco to a minor and were issued ordinance violations for the “Sale of Tobacco to a Minor.”
