Student selected to fill vacated position

An NIU Latino undergraduate student has been appointed to fill a minority office administration position as a temporary part-time replacement.

NIU senior Adriana Valencia has been appointed to the position of student programming coordinator in the office of University Resources for Latinos (URL).

She is a member of the Student Association Senate and will graduate this May with a double major in Political Science and Spanish Literature. She plans to attend law school this year.

Valencia’s term will run through the end of June 1992. A search for a new replacement will occur later this semester.

She replaces the position previously held by Yolanda Trevino, who left the position in January to start a new job at Stephens College, a private women’s college in Columbia, Miss.

Nestor Osorio, a member of the URL Advisory Board, said there were two main reasons for selecting a temporary replacement.

“The main reason was time constraints and budget,” Osorio said. He said George Gutierrez, chairman of the advisory board, said there was an immediate need for a replacement for Trevino.

“(Gutierrez) said he did not have enough money in the budget to replace Yolanda right away,” Osorio said.

Osorio said the advisory board recommended hiring a temporary replacement to fill the position until the end of NIU’s fiscal year on June 30, 1992.

Another reason for the delay is NIU’s affirmative action regulations, which he said requires a search committee.

Osorio said Gutierrez will appoint a committee this semester and will hire a replacement by the next fiscal year.
