New Ani DiFranco album needs more spice

By BRIDGET ORKFRITZ | October 6, 2008

Ani DiFranco's most recent album, "Red Letter Year", is a striking, captivating album with true indie-rock sound. "Red Letter Year" is composed of slow, melodic sounds and poetic lyrics. The opener and title track to "Red Letter Year" starts off with...

New potential CW show could lose viewers for the network

By KYLE SPENCER | October 6, 2008

"Smallville" has done wonders for CW's ratings, but with it nearing its conclusion after eight popular seasons, a new "super hero" may be taking Clark Kent's place. For casual comic book readers, the name Dick "DJ" Grayson may not mean much, but perhaps...

Ten greatest celebrity voices

By ORLANDO LARA | October 6, 2008

10. Bobcat Goldthwait Better known as the annoying-voiced guy from the really bad "Police Academy" movies, his shrill, irritating voice is piercing enough to strip the black off a chalkboard. 9. Bill Cassidy Some of you may be wondering how NIU's own...

By DAN STONE | October 6, 2008

A few weeks ago Sony released WipEout HD on the Playstation Network. WipEout HD is not a completely new game, but rather a remake featuring some tracks and teams from the two Playstation Portable games. The interesting part is that in all my years of...

‘Very disappointed’ with my favorite band’s new album

By NYSSA BULKES | October 5, 2008

I like change, but right now, I'm adverse to it. So many new albums have come out recently, yet some fail to stay true to their old sound. As an alternative, progressive, garage and grunge rock fan, I tapped my foot anxiously for Kings of Leon's fourth...

‘Religulous’ somber but powerful

By ORLANDO LARA | October 5, 2008

Bill Maher does not take the time to explicitly explain the title of his documentary, "Religulous" because he does not have to. A combination of "religion" and "ridiculous," the title perfectly describes Maher's view on religion. With director Larry Charles...

‘Beverly Hills Chihuahua’ better left for DVD

By JEN HANCE | October 5, 2008

From the success of movies such as "Babe," "Dr. Dolittle," and various Budweiser commercials, it is not hard to figure out that talking critters are a big hit among kids and adults. Disney seemed to notice this as well, as the recent fad of pocket dogs...

Five entertainment items worth your time in October

By HEATHER SKRIP | October 5, 2008

October seems to be a rather slow month this year for the entertainment industry. However, I was able to pick out a five items that seem like they'll be the highlight of the month. 1) Oasis - "Dig Out of Your Soul" (10/7) The bickering brothers and company...

Flavors of the Week

By NYSSA BULKES | October 5, 2008

Flavors of the Week wants to call out the week's grossest people. Here are this week's picks.

Ellen Degeneres

We're already sick of the 2008 presidential election. We don't need any more crappy, fluff coverage to grate on our nerves even more. This past week, Michelle Obama appeared on "The Ellen Show." Like any other guest, Michelle was required to dance before taking a seat. Rather than let the awkward ritual die in peace, the talk show host attempted to stipulate which Obama - Michelle or the Democratic nominee - would take the trophy in a dance-off. This is political coverage that is in no public's public interest.

Leighton Meester

The mother of "Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester is coming out with a memoir. According to Sept. 5 article on eonline.com, the elder Meester gave birth to "Blair Waldorf's" portrayer while in prison due to a drug-related charge. She is now spilling her guts on everything from her time in jail to her budding starlet of a child. It's like a syndrome in Hollywood: If the parents can't hack it and the kid managed to make it out OK, it's like a golden ticket. Getting out for good behavior is one thing. Getting out and exploiting your offspring is just rotten.

Ledger's landlord

The deceased actor's loft is still on sale for $4,000 more than Ledger paid when he lived there. Rather than being ripped off for $22,000 a month, the scummy landlord is asking $26,000 from anyone wanting the now-infamous living quarters. Sure, it's New York and living is pricey. Tact and respect for the deceased, however, are priceless. One trip to the vomitorium, please.
