Physical Plant's flood cleanup applauded I want to congratulate and thank the staff of the NIU Physical Plant for all they have done and are continuing to do in the aftermath of campus flooding. They have been working around the clock to get all classrooms and office space on campus ready for the start of classes. The Art Building was particularly hard-hit, and the crews are continuing their efforts to ready the classrooms for later this week. I am deeply humbled by their dedication and tireless efforts. My hat's off to all involved in the massive cleanup effort. Rich Holly Acting director, School of Art

Letter to the Editor: Student Enrollment

By Kevin Nedberg | September 19, 2018

Enrollment in university always has and always will be a struggle, and I think most institutions recognize that. However, I think NIU should pat itself on the back for the efforts made to both stabilize and increase our enrollment.I do, however, think...

Extend the Trend: Fake Freckles

Extend the Trend: Fake Freckles

By Abby Wisecarver | March 4, 2018

Around 4 to 5 percent of the world’s population is born with freckles, which is a small amount, according to Foreo. This small percentage explains why “fake freckles” have become super popular, but it does come across as deceiving.

Some women born with freckles have been attempting to cover them up for years, but now freckles have been adopted into the beauty community. Gaining popularity in 2015, fake freckles have skyrocketed and are now trending throughout the fashion world.

“As a person who has freckles, I hate this trend,” said Hannah Muntz, freshman elementary education major. “I went so many years of my life hating the dots on my face and now they are popular? No, I do not like it and will be happy when it finally dies down.”

I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and hate what I see, even if I can’t change it. But freckles are much more than randomized dots on your face, they add charm and character to every freckled-skinned individual.

If adding something small to your face makes you feel better and more confident, then why the heck not? Makeup has no rules and is something you can use to demonstrate creative expression. Pull out your eyeliner and get to dotting! Fake freckles are here to stay and everyone should be able to change their appearance and do whatever they want to.

Extend the Trend: Eyelash Extensions

By Abby Wisecarver | February 21, 2018

There are always ways for us to improve our looks with beauty enhancements, like microblading eyebrows, makeup tattooing and more recently, eyelash extensions. I question if the extensions are affordable for college students and if the upkeep is worth...

Rock music can be used to teach class

By Troy Doetch | September 28, 2010

Even with her earplugs nestled safely, the nu-metal was too loud. Her ears were fine but the bass guitar vibrating against her sternum was so overwhelming she was forced to leave her front row seat at Disturbed's show. This was a disappointment because...
