Men’s basketball to take on Ohio in quarterfinals

By Christopher Loggins

Following its win over Western Michigan University in the first round of the MAC Tournament, men’s basketball (21-11) will face off against Ohio University (20-10) today in the quarterfinals.

The Huskies received contributions from many of their players against the Broncos, helping them to a 56-50 victory. They were led by senior guard Travon Baker, who scored a game-high 18 points. Freshman wing Levi Bradley also contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds for the game.

NIU lost its last contest against the Bobcats 80-69 on Feb. 6, but split the season series. The Huskies beat Ohio on Jan. 6 at the Convocation Center, 80-69.

Ohio is No. 2 in the MAC behind the University of Akron and 11-7 in conference play. The Bobcats are led by junior forward Antonio Campbell, who is averaging 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game.

The Huskies are 2-8 in their last 10 games against Ohio, including a 2-1 record in the last two seasons. They haven’t played well on the road this year, going 3-10 compared to 18-1 on their home floor. They’ve gone 5-5 in their last 10 games, but could pick up their 22nd victory with a win, which would be their highest win total since the 1990-91 season when they won 25. It would also be their second-highest winning season of all time.

The winner will move forward to the semifinal matchup on Friday, which will determine who makes it to the final game of the tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today in Cleveland and will be televised on ESPN3.
