Men’s golf finishes fall in bad fashion

Men’s golf finished its fall season finale on a low note Tuesday, taking 11th out of 12 in the Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Ga.

The Huskies could not follow up on their two best outings of the season and tied the Northern Intercollegiate for a fall opening worst total of 976. NIU’s Pinetree Intercollegiate totals of 330-321-325 were not the scores they have become used to seeing, and head coach Tom Porten thought NIU did not capitalize on holes it should have.

“We struggled with the management of a very good golf course,” Porten said in a news release. “It was a perfect day, no wind, hard setup, great hole locations. We have to become a more disciplined team if we are going to where we need to be to be competitive. We just get greedy when we shouldn’t, and it cost us a bunch of shots early. Today was about management and putting. We had putted much better than we did at Erin Hills, but then today we three-putted about 13 holes.”

Junior Liam White battled a wrist injury over the two-day span but managed to be the top NIU finisher for the second consecutive tournament. White posted his second-lowest total of the fall with a 237 (83-75-79) to take 54th of 68 golfers.

The trio of freshmen did not finish their fall with their top play, either. Caulen Coe was six strokes behind White, totaling a 243.

Coe was a stroke under 80 during the first round, but carded 83 followed by a 81 to conclude the Pinetree Intercollegiate tied for 60th. Five places behind him, Huskie Pierrick Fillon carded a 247 (85-82-80).

Jake Curwin, with back-to-back 83’s and a final round of 85, totaled a 251 to finish one spot behind Fillon in 66th.

Senior Shawn Foley did compete but was disqualified after day one for misplaying a provision.

Porten is not happy the Huskies ended the fall on a low point.

“It was disappointing to end the fall not playing our best round,” Porten said in a news release.

“Our … players learned a lot of hard lessons this fall and we have a lot of work to do through the end of this semester and before the spring begins.”

NIU has a break in competition until February. It returns after its winter practice sessions to the course beginning at the Snowman Getaway Feb. 24 to 25 in Goodyear, Ariz.
