Huggins, Malkin win Scholar-Athlete award

The winners of this week’s NIU Scholar-Athlete award are sophomore Nick Huggins of men’s golf and sophomore Mary Malkin of women’s tennis.

At the Earl Yestingsmeier Individual Invitational in Muncie, Ind., Huggins turned in his best career finish, finishing in fifth place with a 54-hole total of 213. He was only three strokes over par and finished five strokes behind the leader.

At the end of the first round, Huggins led the field, shooting a three-under par 67. He followed up his 67 with 74 in the second round and a 72 in round three.

Huggins’ previous career best finish was at the St. Mary’s Invitational in 2011, when he placed in a tie for 32nd place.

Huggins is majoring in business administration and carries a 3.556 GPA.

At the ITA Regionals over the weekend, Malkin combined to go 4-1 while winning a doubles draw title and placing second in singles play, where she won four of six sets.

Teaming up with teammate Stephanie McDonald, Malkin defeated the Michigan State team of Jennifer Yen and Emily Meyers, 8-6, and Chicago State’s team of Carynne Lloyd and Viviene Noel, 9-7, to win the Beta Flight doubles title.

In singles play, Malkin lost to Michigan State’s Meyers, 6-3, in the Championship round, taking second place.

Malkin holds a GPA of 3.806 and majors in psychology.
