Head coach Mark Montgomery contests a call in a Dec. 2 game against Chicago State. Montgomery has coached the Huskies to their best start since his 2011 arrival, and the team is one win away from beating last season’s total wins.

DeKalb — At halftime, NIU men’s basketball trails the Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville Cougars 34-18 in a game where very little is going NIU’s way.

SIUE junior forward Sidney Wilson leads all players with 12 points. NIU’s top scorer is junior guard Darius Beane with six.

The Huskies’ shooting numbers are abysmal, connecting on just 29.6% of their shot attempts from the field. The Cougars are shooting 44% as a team, including 33.3% from behind the arc. NIU is 0-7 from deep.

Despite the shooting struggles, NIU’s greatest nightmare has been turnovers. The Huskies have committed 13 of them, leading to 18 points for the Cougars, meaning SIUE is nearly out-scoring NIU on extra possessions alone. While SIUE has committed nine turnovers, NIU has had nowhere near the same success capitalizing on them, with only two points from extra possessions.
