3 things to do this weekend

By Jay Ibarra | September 2, 2016

If you’re staying in DeKalb over the weekend, make it fun by keeping busy with friends.

Go to the apple orchard

Jonamac Apple Orchard, 19412 Shabbona Rd. in Malta, is opening this weekend. Grab some friends and head to the corn maze Saturday. This orchard is known for having an oversized chair that makes for a special photo opportunity to look back on. They also have the best apple cider donuts that you might want to try this weekend.

Catch a movie

There are new releases that have hit the theatres — pick one. If friends are around and stuck on what to do, pitch the idea of catching a flick. "The Light Between Oceans" looks like a riviting drama to see, out Sept. 2 at Carmike Theatre, 2160 Sycamore Rd. There are also movies like "Sausage Party" and "Suicide Squad" that have been in theatres for a few weeks, but are worth seeing before they leave.

Have a barbecue

If friends are still here for Labor Day, cook some food together. A lot of the best memories can come from gathering money, going to the store and making a fun Labor Day meal with college friends. On the menu for this Monday could be burgers, chips and a variety of summer fruit — might want to get in the seasonal fruit while it is still here.
